The Washington City Paper yesterday issued an update regarding its legal defense fund against Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder’s frivolous libel lawsuit. Let me be clear at the outset that I believe that Snyder’s suit proves once again that he is a thin-skinned bully, an enemy of free speech, and an incompetent sports owner. His claims of anti-Semitism—a view endorsed by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which has a former Snyder employee on its board—would be laughable even if they weren’t made by a guy who owns a team called the Redskins. I look forward to his suit being dismissed and the judge ordering him to pay the legal fees of his opponents. Nevertheless, the WCP appears to have published one thing, amidst their encyclopedic scores of accusations, that is not true.
Washington City Paper publisher Amy Austin yesterday wrote, “Likewise, the lawsuit implies that our story accused Snyder of personally committing the crime of forgery. In fact, we have no reason to believe he personally did any such thing—and our story never says he did.” This is one of Snyder’s four main contentions. The other three are bullshit.
Here’s what the original story says about Snyder and forgery: “That’s the Dan Snyder who got caught forging names as a telemarketer with Snyder Communications.” There’s no explanation of this, and the words “forging,” “forge,” or “forgery” do not appear again in the piece.
